Mattel Launches Beta of Barbie Girls Virtual World

Mattell will unveil BarbieGirls.com on Monday at an event in New York. In the meantime, I took a quick tour of the open Beta.
The market for the virtual world seems to be ages 13 and under. If you choose to confirm your age as 13 or under, you get a confirmation window that you have cleared the choice to setup an account with your parents.
Great government policy in action 
Once you have created an account, you start out by customizing your Barbie avatar.
Upon completion, you get paid $100 in the BarbieGirls.com virtual currency. Next, you customize your own personal room much like Club Penguin’s personal igloo.
Once your room is satisfactory, you can click on the map and go to numerous places to shop and hang out. I started out first trying to get into the Club and was prompted to connect my Barbie Girl to gain access.
The notion of premium content was consistent throughout the virtual world. In customizing your avatar, certain clothing, eyes, skins, hair styles, and accessories were blocked without having a Barbie connected to your computer.
That’s right… I can only speculate that Barbie is getting USB! Mark Wallace at 3pointD had similar thoughts.
Most clothing and accessories cost anywhere from $20 to $80 in Barbie currency. Users make money by viewing promotional trailers and commercials in the theater.
I only encountered one other avatar while I was logged in and we could barely carry on a conversation because of the overly restrictive chat filter. Common words like “fun” and “haha” were blocked and displayed as “##”.
Hopefully this is made less aggressive before the virtual world comes out of Beta. Another major feature they should be adding are user profiles.
The front-end of the platform is Adobe Flash, unlike many other 2.5D virtual worlds like Habbo and Playdo which require Adobe Shockwave. This is a refreshing change considering Shockwave only runs on Intel Macs using Rosetta emulation, which slows everything down in Firefox and Safari.

Interesting how the virtual Barbies look more like Bratz than real Barbies. Brand dilution, anyone?

Why do you have to have a barbie girl to go to club beauty? That’s not FAIR! you shouldn’t have to have a barbie girls. I haven’t been on for a month! Because it would never let me on. I already have a mp3 player and I wont be able to get 1. I agree with anisha I want a pet! Why does everything that is cool have to be locked! IT’S NOT FAIR!!!!!!!!!
